Biography
YASMIN SCHÖNMANN is a dancer, choreographer, teacher and digital artist from Germany, with a Diploma in Dance from Iwanson International Munich and a Master of Fine Arts in "Dance and Technology" from Tisch School of the Arts/New York University in New York City.
Yasmin has received several awards and recognition for her artistic work including the TWD residency at fabrik Potsdam, the Dis-Tanzen Solo Grant (2023+2021), the GVL Scholarship (2021), the Forecast Mentorship Program (2021), Digital Theater Lab @ HAU/Hebel am Ufer (2020), Pandemic Healing Arts Grant (Berlin 2020), Danspace Residency (NYC 2017), Open Studios for promising young choreographers from Tanztendenz e.V. (Munich 2014), to perform at Palamós Summer Dance in Spain (2013) and to be a Guest Choreographer at Tanztendenz/Munich (2015).
Further she received a scholarship to train with the Pina Bausch Company in Wuppertal, Germany and J CHEN PROJECT in New York City.
Since relocating to Berlin, Germany Yasmin has collaborated with dieffernt artists like 2050+ for the site specific work "Dancing in Transit #2", Sasa Queliz for the production "the game is not over", Juliette Rahon for the productions "MAGICAE" and "La dernière Sarabande", Carly Lave for the Virtual Reality Dance Film "Paar", Maxim Didenko & Vladimir Varnava for the production "Schlachthof 5" at HELLERAU in Dresden, Yu Otagawa for the opera production "Mitridate" at Staatsoper unter den Linden Berlin, Laura Scozzi for the production "Il Viaggio à Reims" at Semperoper Dresden, Yael Bartana/Hagar Orphir for the film "Redemption Now" for the Jewish Museum Berlin and "Wannsee".
While living in New York Yasmin worked with artists and companies such as J CHEN Project, Yoshito Sakuraba, InTW dance, Meghann Padgett, Aaron Samuel Davis, Jasmine Domfort, VALETTO dance, as well as with her own company Y+Y Dance.
In 2015 Yasmin curated and produced her own show `H.O.M.E. - an evening of dance´, where she invited dancers, choreographers and dance film makers to Munich to present their work about Home and Identity at Einstein Kultur Theatre.
In 2018 she co-produced the immersive, site specific dance experience "SHIFT" in New York which guided the audience through a building encountering dance and digital art pieces in different spaces.
In 2022 Yasmin co-produced the interactive and site-specific performance "This is not a Drill!" at Lost Weekend and the Lätare Church in Munich.
In 2015 she founded the dance company Y+Y Dance together with Yuriko Hiroura. Their work has been presented at venues such as Battery Dance Festival 2016, MMAC, Alvin Ailey Citigroup Theater, Jack Crystal Theater, WMAC and Salvatore Capezio Theater in New York, as well as at the InHale Series in Philadelphia.
During her Master studies Yasmin gained experience in filming and editing dance and has since then developed VR Dance Pieces, Dance Films and Motion Capture pieces. These multimedia pieces have been shown in New York, Berlin and Munich. It is her mission to design dance concepts for the digital medium, because she is passionate about giving dance a stronger stand in the arts community through making dance more accessible via film. She is convinced that portraying dance through the lens of a camera can reach a broader audience and spark more interest in contemporary dance.
Since 2023 Yasmin is working for the Performing Arts Program Berlin as an expert in "Dance & New Media" and has joined the Tanzinitiative Brandenburg to develop concepts for dance in Brandenburg.
